From Policing to Partnership: Leveraging GenAI for Compassionate and Culturally Responsive Academic Integrity

Hebatallah Shoukry, Gule Saman, Nidhal AbdulAziz & Clare Thomson (Heriot-Watt University, UK)

This pilot study explores how Generative AI (GenAI) can support fair, efficient, and empathetic decision-making in academic misconduct cases across culturally diverse campuses. Conducted within the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, the study engages Academic Misconduct Committee members who assess hypothetical case studies alongside GenAI-generated decisions based on university policy. Using survey data, it examines perceptions of GenAI as a collaborative partner and its effects on integrity, fairness, and inclusion. By connecting across cultures, the study highlights the potential of creatively using human–AI collaboration to enhance academic integrity with compassion and consistency.
