Ayrshire Coast & Robert Burns Heritage Tour
Departure: St Andrew’s Building, University of Glasgow
Discover some of Scotland’s most beautiful coastal scenery and literary heritage along the Ayrshire coast.
Departing from the University of Glasgow, we’ll travel approximately one hour southwest to the dramatic coastline of Ayrshire, where rugged cliffs, historic landmarks, and sweeping views of the Firth of Clyde await.
Our first destination is Culzean Castle, one of Scotland’s most spectacular country estates. Perched high on a clifftop overlooking the sea, this magnificent 18th-century castle is renowned for its striking architecture, elegant interiors, and extensive grounds. Often nicknamed “The Little White House,” Culzean became closely associated with President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was gifted an apartment within the castle following the Second World War.
During our visit, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of the castle, followed by free time to explore the estate at your own pace. Wander through woodland paths and formal gardens, browse the castle bookshop, or simply take in the breathtaking coastal views. Lunch will be available on-site.
In the afternoon, we continue to the nearby village of Alloway, birthplace of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. Here we’ll visit the humble cottage where Burns was born in 1759 and learn more about the life and legacy of the writer whose works include Auld Lang Syne, Ae Fond Kiss, To a Mouse, and A Man’s a Man for A’ That.
Following time to explore the Burns heritage site and enjoy refreshments, we return to Glasgow, arriving back at the University at approximately 6:00 PM.
